Deceased Member Accounts

Losing a loved one is an emotional experience, often made more difficult by the burden of dealing with the paperwork and other logistical matters related to your loved one's finances. We understand how stressful this can be, and we're here to guide you through the process.

Where Should I Begin?

The first step is to notify us as soon as possible after the death of a loved one. You can call or email us, we'll note the account. Upon hearing from you, we'll request the following information:

  • Name of deceased

  • Date of death

  • Certified copy of the death certificate

  • Name(s) of the individual(s) who will be settling the account

  • A Court Qualification letter or an Affidavit to Disburse Account of Decendent, if there are no joint owner(s) or payable on death (POD) beneficiaries on the account

Am I Required to Close a Deceased Member's Account?

  • Yes, however, we will allow for the account to remain open while joint owners, POD payees, and those serving in fiduciary capacities, work toward closing a deceased member's account and finalize pre-authorized debits and credits on the account.

  • If the deceased person is the primary account holder, all dividends earned in the amount of $10 or more will continue to report in the decendent's name and social security number for tax purposes.

  • Electing to close the account may limit tax-filing complications. Please consult an estate or tax professional.

Other Things You'll Want to Address When Closing a Deceased Member's Account

  • Cancel any direct deposits

  • Cancel any pre-authorized drafts

  • Re-direct pre-authorized drafts and direct deposits to new accounts

  • Update beneficiary information under the survivor's account, if necessary

  • Review account history for recurring electronic withdrawals as action may be needed to stop future drafts

  • Update official documents, as needed
